Great Starter Kit July 26, 2010 Vicky Pros: I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday. He flipped when he unwrapped the box. It's very beautiful. Nicely painted wooded trains! He loves trains and have been building LEGO trains himself or lining up blocks to make trains and track. This Down by the Dock set is his first train set. It's a little expensive but I think it's a nice starter kit. We plan on adding more tracks and scenes to it.
Cranky is a lot of fun to play with. He also loves the bridge and all different kinds of tracks: short, long, curved, switch tracks, etc. Very nice variety.
My son would make up stories while playing. Mommy and Daddy have fun watching him plays.
Cons: There are 2 missing tracks in the box!! I was rather disappointed. I contacted the seller but did not have any response. If this rating is for the seller and not the product, I would have given a much lower rating.
When I was looking for a train set, I was looking for a set that has a play mat like this one as I thought it would make the set more realistic and fun. The mat does curl up on the side and needs to be pressed somehow... I am thinking about pressing it then gluing it on a board. But the mat doesn't matter to my son as he "designs" his own path that extends out of the mat. So the mat has been kept folded on the shelf. Perhaps when he is a little older and learns how to play nice, I will bring it out again.
Bottom line, don't let the mat affect your decision on buying a train set. You can always make one on your own too.
Unsure: The toy is 3 weeks old so it's hard to judge the quality yet. I found the paint on Bullstrode got chipped (only a VERY SMALL area though). But seeing the way my son plays it, or any 2-year olds, I think it's inevitable. Other than that, they look pretty durable to me. Definitely not the flimsy type.
Nice set, but the mat is disappointing January 9, 2010 JJ Owen (Austin, tx United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Overall, the Down by the Docks set was a good deal (at $90 before Xmas) since it includes Cranky, a decent track with two elevated portions along with Percy and a truck among other items. The greatest disappointment was the playmat. It is plastic over fabric. The fold creases have still not come out of it and about a week after we set it up, all the corners started rolling up. The fold creases made it hard to initially keep the train track together (and of course, he's 2 1/2, so he wanted to play immediately!). The only way to make the playmat usable that we can come up with is to glue it down to piece of heavy duty cardboard or plywood. I think my husband is going to make a custom train table for the playmat, but that portion of the set definitely did not live up to expectations and was a major reason we purchased this set.

Thomas & Friends "Down by the Docks" Set March 27, 2009 D. DeSpain 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm very pleased with this purchase. My 2-yr-old grandson is obsessed with Thomas & "choo-choos" and he loves this. It's durable enough for a pre-schooler with enough different items (ship, "Cranky," the bridge, hills)to keep play interesting. The item was well-packed when shipped, so no problems with returns and replacements.
