Amazon.com Review
Thomas and his friends are getting ready for a festival. They have to prepare the rides, sort the goods coming in for the event, and even catch up with some runaway cows before the festival can take place. What's more, they can't move a piston until they're cleaned up in the engine shop. Thomas & Friends: The Great Festival Adventure offers a series of games to computer users as young as 2 years old. As Thomas, Harold, and the other trains and tractors prepare for the festival, they enlist the players' aid to do everything from keeping track of the number of passengers who can fit in a passenger car to conducting the festival band. Early sorting, color matching, and shape-recognition skills are given a workout in the process. The game also seeks to keep its young target audience engaged by including long animated sequences of Thomas going about his business and interacting with his various friends as he does.

This program gives an excellent introduction to educational computer gaming for kids and parents alike. With bright, simple graphics and easy-to-run activities, it is both simple to use and varied enough to maintain player interest. Thomas fans will be delighted with the opportunity to polish up and oil the various locomotives, and the animations will provoke laughter and delight among train-loving kids. The end result is a package that will please early learners immensely. (Ages 2 to 6) --Alyx Dellamonica

4 out of 5 stars Installation tips   September 15, 2009
Capt. Destructo (Austin, TX USA)
We've just had this game a couple of days. My 4 year old likes the game pretty well so far. I've installed it on two computers now. On one that never had anything older than Windows XP on it, it runs fine. On the older one (the kiddo's computer) that is running XP, but had Windows NT on it long ago, it would tell me that the OS couldn't run the game. It seems that a title for the OS, including the string "Windows NT", is coded in somewhere on the hard drive, even though the machine is now running XP. In that case, setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 let it run successfully.

5 out of 5 stars worked for me on windows xp   May 11, 2009

I run windows xp home edition on my PC and the game worked fine, I just clicked on the compatibility tab to have it run in windows 98 format like the other reviewer suggested. A few error messages come up about not being able to print (no big deal since my little guy isn't too interested in printing the stuff out anyways, might be a big deal to other munchkins maybe?) , I just hit the enter key a few times to make the error messages go away and the game loads and plays.

My 5 year old little guy, who is a huge thomas fan, absolutely loves this game and plays it all by himself without needing any help or assistance. The actual games are a bit simplistic so not a huge amount of "replay" value but on the other hand they aren't likely to frustrate little kids either. Cut scenes showing the trains and sir topham hat are fun to watch my little guy loves the 3D graphics.

4 out of 5 stars Works on XP, Vista   December 11, 2008

Kids 2-5 love it. But you already know that from the other reviews. I wanted to comment on compatibility.

I believe we have this edition - it's fairly old, and it has the Hasbro brand.

It appears to work fine on both XP (SP3) and Vista Home Basic. I installed it on XP a long time ago and don't remember if I had to do anything special, but I don't immediately see anything. I just now installed it on Vista, and it appears to work fine immediately.

Printing does switch away from the window, and you have to switch back manually. (That's why it only gets four stars.)

BTW, this game is great for teaching mouse-eye coordination.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging computer game for Thomas fans   March 26, 2007

My son loves this game. One part of the adventure is to help Cranky the Crain match colors and shapes.

I work with autistic children and thus far this game has been worth its weight in gold. It's simple enough for the younger children to operate with a bit of demonstration and for a couple of my kids is the only thing I can motivate them with.
